Now you can take a shikara ride on Dal Lake with a tap on Uber app

Uber on Monday launched its first-ever water transport service in India, offering tourists the convenience of pre-booking shikara rides on Dal Lake in Srinagar through its app.
Dubbed Uber Shikara, the limited-period service aims to enhance the tourism experience while promoting grassroots economic opportunities for shikara drivers in Jammu and Kashmir.
With similar water transport services in European cities like Venice, this marks the ride-hailing app’s first such venture in Asia.
The initiative introduces features such as pre-booking through Uber Reserve and trip insurance for rides, marking a first for the iconic Dal Lake shikaras.
Bookings can be made up to 15 days in advance or at least 12 hours prior, for one-hour slots between 10 a.m. and 5 p.m. Each ride accommodates up to four passengers, and departs from Shikara Ghat No 16.
Uber will not charge fees on Shikara bookings, allowing the full fare to go directly to the drivers. “The entire amount will go to the Shikara drivers, creating additional economic opportunities for grassroots tourism workers in J&K,” a company said in a statement.
Uber initially launched the service with seven Shikaras and plans to expand the fleet based on demand, reported news agency PTI. Fares will adhere to government-regulated rates.
“Uber Shikara is our humble attempt to blend technology and tradition to give a seamless experience to travellers for their Shikara ride. We are proud to create this iconic experience, enhancing accessibility and uplifting tourism in the breathtaking landscape of Kashmir,” said Prabhjeet Singh, President of Uber India and South Asia.
The launch comes as Srinagar gears up for the busy winter holiday season, offering travellers a unique way to experience the scenic beauty of Dal Lake.
