, GOLD Trim on Rims & Handle, Circa 1939+ from Longton, Staffordshire, England
DESCRIPTION:
This superb quality bone china has color that is bright and vivid on the white background.  This is painted on a blank of fine bone china with gold trim on the edges and on the handle.  The fluted cup and saucer are tied together by the use of the Dogwood Blossom pattern and gold trim.
CONDITION:
While this set is classified as used, its condition is superb.  We find no damage or defects.  There appears to be absolutely no wear to the color and no crazing.  There are no chips, nicks, scratches, hairlines, cracks, rubbings or repairs to this stunning set.  We can find no utensil wear.
DIMENSIONS:
The saucer has a diameter of 5 9/16" & its height is 3/4".  The fluted cup which has a diameter of 2 15/16" and a height of 2 3/4" is beautiful and both ping delightfully when tapped.
HISTORY/MARKS:
Hammersley & Company, manufacturer of bone china at Alsager Pottery in Longton, England, traces their history back to Harvey Adams & Co. 1869-1885.  Titus Hammersley was a partner and continued the concern as Harvey Adams & Company retiring in 1872.  George Harris Hammersley continued in partnership with Harvey Adams, but was replaced by his brother Gilbert Hammersley about 1885.  The business then traded as Hammersley & Co.  Gilbert was joined by his sons, Eric in 1910 and Leslie in 1919.  The pottery was incorporated in 1932 becoming Hammersley & Co. (Longton) Ltd.  Family control of the business continued until June of 1970 when it was acquired by Carborundum Company (the owner of Spode Ltd.).  The mark on both is identified by Geoffrey A. , as mark #1907 used in the 1939+ time period.
As collectors ourselves, we tend to be very picky and find it necessary to point out anything we see.  We don't believe you will find a Hammersley cup & saucer set in better condition.
