    Description

1867 Shield nickel with rays between the stars on the reverse, with re-punched date. Referring the description in the Cherrypicker's Guide, the explanation to the re-punched date is " the date was initially punched too far left, then corrected in a more normal position. The die was probably polished, leaving remnants of a "7" between the primary "6" and "7", and a secondary "7" between the primary "8" and "6"." The 1867 with rays is a worthwhile type coin even without the re-punched date. This piece still shows good detail in the frame around the shield and the vertical lines. The horizontal lines tend to be weak struck and don't show well in the center. The reverse is still showing good detail, with a little effect of weak strike at the first letters of "Cents". Nice color and nice surfaces, with only very light and typical contact marks. The obverse shows a die break on the left side that runs from the tip of an arrow to the rim.
